Is it possible to be a christian scientist

This is even in the Bible. Both science and faith seek the truth, not easy answers. People who seek popularity and fast, easy answers, or who use fact manipulation, lies, politics, and loyalty to explain the world they want instead of the world that is , will struggle to move our scientific discoveries forwards. Those who have scientific breakthroughs are patient, persistent, honest, analytical, accept difficult information, admit their mistakes, try to make it better the next time, and move on.

These are the same character traits that the Bible encourages us to build as Christians. I will fully admit that not all scientists have these traits. I also know that not all Christians have these traits.

We are better scientists, better Christians, and better people when we do. And although popularity, simplicity, and loyalty are not always bad—they should not be prioritized over truth for scientists or Christians. Studying science helps me live in peace with the unknown.

Beyond this aggravating place, the next level is realizing that no one knows the answer. This is even more unsettling. However, scientists live in that unsettling place. Science is about speculating on the unknown, then testing it to see if our speculations were right or wrong, or still unknown. Typically, once we find the answer, it yields an entirely new slew of questions. I once read a book which said that studying science is like giving our Founding Fathers a computer with amazing battery life, obviously.

They figure out how to click icons and make things work, type, and open some apps. Maybe they rock at Minesweeper. They think they have it figured out. That is what it is like to be a scientist. Studying science makes God bigger. As a child, I realized God made that little world with plants and animals and rocks. As I got older, I realized God made the great big universe with stars and atoms and photosynthesis and all those blood-clotting chemicals, which I immediately forgot after my board exams.

The more we learn, the bigger God has to get. If He created all of it, he has to be bigger and smarter than all of it. Psalm lays this out beautifully. The more we understand about the world, the bigger God gets.

S2 ep2: What did the future look like in the past? S2 ep 3: What is the future of wellbeing? The term Science indicates that Christ Jesus understood and acted in accord with the laws of this loving God, laws that may be proven by anyone who follows them.

Many have found that when they better understand their relationship to God through this Science of Christianity, their characters are transformed and their health restored. Such spiritual growth inspires a heartfelt desire to help others know and experience how loved we all are by God.

In , a serious injury compelled Mary Baker Eddy, a child of New England Congregationalists with a deep love of the Bible, to turn wholeheartedly to God. She opened her Bible to an account of Jesus healing a man quickly and completely. A new sense of life in God, Spirit, as the only reality flooded her thought, and she was healed spontaneously.

But she yearned to know how and why. For the next several years, she continued to search and find in the Bible the underlying laws of God that would form the basis of her teaching and practice of Christian Science. In Christian Science, God is seen as always caring for and protecting His children, which includes supplying every human need, such as health and purpose.

The practice of Christian healing through spiritual means is expected to be both humane in spirit and effective in results.

Thousands of first-hand accounts of physical and other healings across the spectrum of the human condition may be found online. Christian Scientists normally turn to God in prayer for help.

On the other hand, there should definitely be ethical issues that make you want to get stuck into new research that will help people or tackle injustices. For example, a great deal of biological research may feed into medical treatments; ecology helps us understand how to look after creation; and the physical sciences can help produce energy-saving or appropriate technologies.

If a Muslim and a Christian drop the same ball from the same height under identical conditions, it will fall at the same speed. This relative level of objectivity means that a scientist can be respected by her colleagues for doing good work, regardless of what she believes and what her colleagues think of that worldview.

I am glad to see that many senior scientists do their best to find appropriate ways to make their own faith visible, so that people like my younger self can find role models and mentors.

From the point of view of the church, a good theology of work affirms that paid employment of any kind can be part of our worship in a broad sense, including science.

They may be called to use their time and talents on different things, and they can always find alternative ways to stay firmly embedded in and contributing to the Church community. One of the most difficult questions for a Christian in the sciences is how the knowledge generated by their work relates to the Bible.

For some this is controversial, and it has even taken people away from the Church completely.
