Painting Guardians unfortunately are still present so escaping the Painted World's a bit of a chore regardless. You can cheese Super Ornstein with a bow, stand with a broken pillar in between you and him and he will just fire lightning at the pillar.

So you can just stand there and take him out albiet a little slowly with a bow. Lore wise, Ornstein, but in game, Smough.

Enemies fighting each other in this game just sit face to face and attack and Smough would out damage and out poise Ornstein. While they are both strong and get annoying in their super forms, the speed of Ornstein compared to Smough is just annoying to deal with. Super orn. For Super Ornstein you can literally just hang out between his legs, and run out for the AoE. Smough is weak to bleed damage in his lightning form.
