What is degrees plato

But for the majority of homebrewers, these formulas will provide all the accuracy they need. Winemakers as well as the sugar and juice industry typically use degrees Brix. British and continental European brewers generally use degrees Plato. American brewers use a mixture of degrees Balling, degrees Plato and specific gravity.

Home brewers of wine, mead, cider, and beer makers typically use specific gravity. You need both the final gravity from the hydrometer, and the brix value from the refractometer.

If you have both of these values, you can determine the ABV without knowing the original gravity using a calculator. Refractometers are about the only other reasonable alternative for the homebrewer. They are a little more expensive, but usually much easier to use. Take note however, reading final gravity of your beer is not a one step operation. All in all, I really like my refractometer and use it multiple times every time I brew, I've absolutely no regrets with this purchase.

Hydrometers are used in much the same way when measuring remaining sugar in fermenting must or wine as they are use in measuring sugar in unfermented juice. The major difference is that CO2 trapped in solution can collect on the Hydrometer and affect buoyancy.
