What is oud made of

Inspired by the moment when the sun goes down in the Middle East and people pour excitedly into the streets, it has an exuberance and exoticism that goes above and beyond. Charismatic, seductive and full of mellow flavour, it is well-balanced and intense, but with a mellow flavour. Saffron notes and pelargonium have been used in its top, agarwood, rose and Atlas cedarwood at the heart and leather notes, incense and guaiac wood in its trailing base layer.

Combining the almost sacrilegious oud wood with exotic rosewood, cardamom, Chinese pepper, sandalwood, vetiver, tonka bean, vanilla and amber, it has set an industry standard and in turn become a bestseller.

It has bite thanks to the citrus fruits but dries down to a mellow spin on oud, achieved through the Earl Grey tea facets of the bergamot and cedarwood, which is dry, intensely woody and gives the brambly aspect in the base of the fragrance.

Created by celebrated perfumer Christine Nagel, and presented in a black glass bottle unique to the Cologne Intense line , it leaves a trail of musk-like accents, which, when combined with praline, give a fresh and contemporary feel to an ingredient which is central to Middle Eastern fragrance traditions.

Which is what makes Oud Palao, centred around the dark, woody and resinous notes of oud from Laos, even more beguiling.

Bulgarian rose, palao oud, Indian cypriol and sandalwood from Sri Lanka form the structure of the fragrance, which is softened and sweetened by Somalian oilbanum, Madagascan vanilla, Spanish cistus and patchouli from Indonesia. It also has a twang of incense about it, even though none has been used in its composition. A constant bestseller within the range and a softer more French take on one of the rarest and oldest essences used in perfumery.

Having worked for legendary fragrance houses, such as Guerlain, he now steers the ship of his own hugely successful eponymous line of super-luxe parfums. A mix of tradition and modernity, it is sweet, spicy, soft, leathery and very sensual, taking the sting out of the sometimes divisive oud ingredient. Bergamot and lemon sit up top, offering the obligatory uplifting opening, before unexpectedly exploring the powdery, floral highs of rose de mai, jasmin de grasse and ylang ylang.

It is in the base where the magic really happens, however: a cocktail of musk, agarwood oud , leather, ambrette, birch, tonka bean, vanilla, nutmeg, oak moss and sandalwood. Pricey, but worth the investment. Created by renowned perfumers Maurice Roucel and Pierre-Constantin Guiros in , The Other Side Of Oud is the newest addition to the noble and lauded Oud Collection of fine fragrances from this historic perfume house.

Inspired by a time when the two great civilisations of Britain and the Orient were closely entwined, it is one of the most mystical, addictive and moorish scents and perfect for cosy nights in front of a fire. A bounty of spices, such as cinnamon, cardamom and ginger, tickle the senses at first spritz, drying down to a unique roasted flavour of coffee, coffee flowers, geranium, vanilla absolu and smoked incense.

Since , this brand has stood as a symbol of stealth Italian luxury. It comes as no surprise, then, that its unique but very wearable interpretation of the oud ingredient, part of the Signatures of the Sun collection, would make our list as an ease-in for any agarwood oud virgins. Paying tribute to the traditions of the Middle East, it opens with the same Mediterranean citrus fruits common to its signature Colonia fragrance before delving deep into the rich flavours of coriander, amayris wood, sandalwood, cedarwood, agarwood oud , musk and patchouli.

Surprisingly light given the characteristic potency of the raw oud material. While it still has the mystical and smoky Middle Eastern flavour expected from the precious oud wood, it also explodes with freshness thanks to an abundance of invigorating mint. Great for day as well as evening. Inspired by the mystery of Snake Jasper, an ancient stone from New Zealand and a symbol of regeneration and life-force, Belletrud set out to create a scent that was timeless, masculine and elegant.

Job done! Geranium leaf for aromatic freshness is blended with the spiritual force of Somalian smoked black incense resinous, leathery and spicy and anchored by agarwood oud essence from Bangladesh. Created by Pierre Negrin, this one — mysterious and moody, and inspired by a smoky journey through the misty mountains of Borneo — has loads of masculine bravado.

The base is very interesting, using the essence of agarwood oud smoke, instead of oud oil, which gives it an even more intense flavour. Cistus, olibanum, leather and sandalwood cushion the punchy blow. Launched earlier this year, Nuit de Feu Fiery Night , follows suit, conjuring up the scent of incense rising from the dunes and a crackling camp fire under a starlit Middle Eastern sky.

Unisex, but firmly positioned towards the more masculine side of the Vuitton portfolio, it is a vibrant tribute to the sacred incense ingredient, using it in its top which is pretty rare as an uplifting tonic. An infusion of natural leather follows the white and black incense combo, trailing to a mellow yet smoky base where the oud wood, enveloped in musk, makes its presence known. A woody, oriental powerhouse that packs quite a punch, it also comes as a handy travel spray, and is refillable from any store that features a Vuitton perfume fountain yes, that really is a thing.

Created by Shadi Samra of the Real Oud Factory, it opens with a spicy head of cardamom, which is given some oomph from sparkling notes of pink pepper and orange.

A heady middle of green and spicy cannabis alongside saffron and nutmeg follows, but it's all about the base with this one, which features a lingering trail of pure oud oil, woody notes, musk and cedar wood. Definitely better suited to evening than day. Formulated by Ormonde Jayne founder Linda Pilkington, the standout scent, in our opinion, is Ormonde Elixir, based on the original Ormonde Man with its forests of hemlock and cedar but obviously updated with the animalistic spice of the precious oud ingredient.

Cardamom, coriander, grass oil, black hemlock, violet, jasmine absolute, vetiver, cedarwood, amber and sandalwood are added, making it a very complex but very wearable formula. A rare and precious jewel with plenty of Eastern promise, the oud accord that is celebrated is joined by Italian bergamot, pink pepper, ambrette seeds, suede, birch, jasmine and vanilla. An already heavy hitter reimagined in as a punchy extrait de parfum interpretation of the original Oud formulation, this is the one for true oud aficionados.
